Record Setting Saved for Final Day
February 24, 2018

Texas saved its best performances for the final day of the 2018 Big 12 Swimming & Diving Championship, knocking off six event records en route to winning the men’s and women’s team titles.

The Longhorn men produced their 22nd Big 12 title, while the women inked their 16th.

The day was highlighted by Big 12 Men’s Diver and Men’s Newcomer of the Meet Jordan Windle’s (UT) NCAA record in the platform event. He became the sixth freshman in Big 12 history to earn the men’s diver honor after breaking the Big 12 championship and league record, besting the previous score by over 36 points.

Meanwhile Big 12 Men’s Swimmer of the Meet Tate Jackson and Rebecca Millard of Texas bested previous Big 12 championship records in the 100-yard freestyle twice during the final day of action. Jackson set the championship and Big 12 record in preliminaries (41.42) to break the nine year-old record, then clocked in at 41.27 during finals. Millard broke the 2010 record, then went on to lower her time during finals to 47.46.

Austin Katz (UT) won the men’s 200-yard backstroke with a time of 1:39.10, which set a league championship record.

The evening closed with the UT 400-medley relay squads setting both the men’s and women’s meet record. On the men’s side, their time of 2:48.35 also set a conference high.

In a photo finish, West Virginia’s Tristen Disibio won the men’s 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:56.00, touching in just six-tenths of a second sooner than UT’s Casey Melzer.

Next up will be the NCAA Championships. The women’s event will take place March 14-17 in Columbus, Ohio while the men’s teams will descend on Minneapolis, Minn. March 21-24. The NCAA Zone A Diving Championships will be held in Piscataway, New Jersey March 5-7.
