For a third consecutive year, six Big 12 players were selected in the NBA Draft.

Oklahoma guard Trae Young (5th by Dallas before being traded to Atlanta), Texas center Mohamed Bamba (6th by Orlando) and Texas Tech guard Zhaire Smith (16th by Phoenix before being traded to Philadelphia) were taken in the first 16 picks on Thursday.

In the second round, West Virginia’s Jevon Carter was nabbed 32nd overall by the Memphis Grizzlies. A pair of Kansas Jayhawks were also selected in the second round, as Devonte’ Graham was taken 34th by Atlanta and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk picked 47th by the Los Angeles Lakers.

A trio of Big 12 players were traded during Thursday evening’s draft. Young was swapped from Dallas to Atlanta, while Smith moved from Phoenix to Philadelphia and Graham was traded from Atlanta to Charlotte.

Young is the sixth Sooner to be selected in the first five picks of the NBA Draft and is the highest of any guards to be taken in Oklahoma history. The freshman is the 10th first round pick and seventh lottery selection for OU.

Bamba is UT's highest draft selection since Tristan Thompson went at No. 4 in 2011 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Bamba also is Texas' first lottery pick since Myles Turner in 2015 (No. 11 pick by the Indiana Pacers).

Smith is the second player in Texas Tech history to be selected in the opening round. Tony Battie was chosen with the fifth overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in 1997.

This year's draft is the 21st time in 22 seasons the Big 12 has had at least one first-round choice. It marks the 13th consecutive year that at least one Big 12 student-athlete has been taken in the NBA Draft lottery as one of the top 14 picks. The three first round selections were the most for the Big 12 since three of the top six were selected in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Overall, 69 players have been chosen in the past 11 drafts. A total of 116 players from the Big 12 have been selected since the first league season in 1996-97.

KU has had a total of 33 players chosen since the Big 12 began play, more than any other league school. The Texas Longhorns are next among current members with 19 draftees, followed by Iowa State with 11, Oklahoma at 10, Oklahoma State at nine and Baylor with eight. Texas Tech (4),  Kansas State (3) and West Virginia (1) round out the Big 12 team draft totals.
