Lagerald Vick (Kansas) earned his first Big 12 Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honor while Talen Horton-Tucker (Iowa State) and Jaxson Hayes (Texas) shared Big 12 Newcomer of the Week.
Vick became the first Big 12 player this season to record a 30-point game and accomplished it in consecutive outings. In a win over Vermont, the senior guard posted a then career-high 32 points on 12-of-14 shooting. He went 8-of-8 from the 3-point line to set a Big 12 and KU record, two shy of the NCAA mark. Vick improved his career best with 33 points four days later against Louisiana.
Horton-Tucker connected on a career-high five first-half 3-pointers to lead the Cyclones past Texas Southern. The freshman guard posted career highs for points (26), three-pointers (5), rebounds (5) and steals (4) in his first career 20-point game.
Hayes averaged 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in Texas’ wins over UL-Monroe and The Citadel. The freshman forward hit 9-of-13 from the field for a 69.2 shooting percentage.
