Oklahoma’s Brenna Dowell has been named the South Central Region Gymnast of the Year while Denver’s Maddie Karr was named the Region 2 co-Gymnast of the Year, the Women’s College Gymnastics Association (WCGA) announced Wednesday.
Dowell, who was also the 2019 Big 12 Gymnast of the Year, helped lead Oklahoma to a No. 1 ranking for 12 consecutive weeks and a 26-0 record. Competing in the all-around for the first time in her collegiate career, the Odessa, Mo., native set a career high with a 39.725 and finished the regular season ranked eighth nationally. At the NCAA Athens Regional, Dowell was the all-around champion, the first regional honor of her career.
Karr earned four regular season All-American honors with final national rankings of No. 4 in the all-around, No. 4 on vault, No. 9 on bars and tied for No. 12 on beam. She captured Denver’s first-ever Big 12 all-around title as well as a share of the all-around title at the Corvallis Regional. Karr also helped lead the Pioneers to the first regional team championship in program history. The DU junior has now won the region’s Gymnast of the Year award in all three of her seasons at Denver. A DU gymnast has won the award every year since 2016. Sharing the honor with Karr is Minnesota’s Lexy Ramler.
The Sooners and Pioneers will compete at the NCAA Championship in Fort Worth, Texas, April 19-20. Both teams will be in Semifinal II on Friday, April 19, at 6 p.m. CT at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
