Game 13: No. 4 West Virginia 2, No. 1 Texas Tech 0
No. 4-seed West Virginia punched its ticket to the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship title game with a 2-0 win over No. 1-seed Texas Tech Saturday night.
Two Mountaineers combined to one-hit the Red Raiders, as freshman Ryan Bergert made his first start of the year, going five innings and allowing just the one hit with four strikeouts, earning his second win of 2019 in the process. Freshman Zach Ottinger went the rest of the way, throwing four hitless innings and picking up his first save of the year.
West Virginia (37-19) manufactured its two runs, scoring once in the top of the third inning thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Darius Hill, and again in the top of the sixth on a run-scoring double play.
In that sixth inning, junior Brandon White led things off with a single, then stole second base and advanced to third on an error by the Red Raiders. After a walk, White trotted home on an ensuing double play to give the Mountaineers the 2-0 lead.
Two runs proved to be all the Mountaineers needed as Bergert and Ottinger shut down the Texas Tech offense. The West Virginia pitching duo retired the Texas Tech side in order in all but two innings.
Red Raiders freshman Hunter Dobbins (2-1) took the loss after going six innings and allowing two runs on five hits with five punchouts.
Texas Tech (39-17) is eliminated after a 3-2 performance at the 2019 Championship. West Virginia will advance to the title game to take on the winner of Sunday morning’s No. 3 Oklahoma State-No. 6 TCU matchup. The semifinal is scheduled for 9 a.m. with the championship to follow at 1:15 p.m.
Game 14: No. 3 Oklahoma State 7, No. 6 TCU 6 (10 Innings)
No. 3-seed Oklahoma State clinched its spot in the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship title game with a walk-off 7-6 victory over No. 6-TCU in 10 innings.
OSU junior Alix Garcia provided the heroics, singling to left field to drive in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th.
The Cowboys (35-18) got out to a 4-0 lead through two innings. Junior Cade Cabbiness hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the second that served as an opening blow.
But the Horned Frogs (32-26) responded to tie things up in the top of the fourth, as senior Josh Watson collected a RBI base knock and junior Hunter Wolfe slashed a two-run single down the right field line.
Then in the sixth, Wolfe drove in another run, this time with a double, to put TCU ahead 5-4. But the Cowboys wouldn’t go quietly, as Garcia reached on a fielding error that allowed a run to score and things were tied 5-5, forcing extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, TCU junior Austin Henry demolished a solo home run to dead center field and the Horned Frogs went up 6-5.
But in the bottom half, senior Christian Funk led off with a single and reached third after a fielding error by TCU. After a strikeout, junior Andrew Navigato singled up the middle to bring home the tying run, and with two outs Garcia finished the deal, sending the Cowboys to the championship.
OSU advances to take on No. 4-seed West Virginia in the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship title game. The Horned Frogs will head home after an impressive 3-2 week at the Championship.
