All-Big 12 Awards Announced for Men's Golf
June 03, 2019

Twelve individuals are honored on the 2019 All-Big 12 Men’s Golf Postseason Awards. Highlighting the honors are Player of the Year Viktor Hovland (Oklahoma State), Newcomer of the Year Cole Hammer (Texas) and Coach of the Year Alan Bratton (Oklahoma State). Student-athlete awards are based on the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, while Coach of the Year honors are voted on by league coaches.

This marks the first time since 2014 and 12th time overall that a Cowboy has been named Player of the Year. Hovland earned the honor after being ranked the best golfer in the nation following the NCAA Championships. The junior had six top-10 finishes and placed second at the Big 12 Championship. The Oslo, Norway native was also named the Ben Hogan Award winner and earned Low Amateur status at The Masters.

Hammer became the 10th Newcomer of the Year in Texas history after ranking No. 7 in the national rankings. The Ben Hogan Award semifinalist recorded a 68.15 rating. The freshman also helped the Longhorns advance to the NCAA Match Play Championship after winning both of his matches against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Bratton earned his first Coach of the Year honor since becoming the head coach in 2013. Bratton led the Cowboys to their first Big 12 title since 2011 and guided the team to its fifth NCAA Championship Match Play appearance in his tenure.

In addition to the individual awards, 11 golfers were named to the All-Big 12 Team. The honor is determined by the top 10 highest-ranked student-athletes according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the NCAA Championships, in addition to the Big 12 Men’s Golf Individual Champion.
