Four Big 12 Players Selected in NBA Draft
June 21, 2019

For a second consecutive year, the Big 12 had two players selected within the top-eight of the NBA Draft. In total, the Conference had four picks in this year’s draft.

Texas Tech small forward Jarrett Culver (6th by Phoenix before being traded to Minnesota) and Texas center Jaxson Hayes (8th by Atlanta before being traded to New Orleans) were the league’s first round selections. A pair of Iowa State standout small forwards in Talen Horton-Tucker (46th by Orlando before being traded to Los Angeles) and Marial Shayok (54th by Philadelphia) were taken in the second round.

Three of the four Big 12 players were traded on Thursday evening’s draft. Culver swapped from Phoenix to Minnesota, while Hayes moved from Atlanta to New Orleans and Horton-Tucker was traded from Orlando to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Culver is the third first round selection and 24th overall from Texas Tech. Former teammate Zhaire Smith was chosen at No. 16 last year, marking the first time Tech had a player taken in the first round in back-to-back years.

Hayes’ selection at eighth overall marked the third-straight year and fourth time in the last five seasons that a Longhorn has been selected in the first round of the NBA Draft (Myles Turner, No. 11 in 2015; Jarrett Allen, No. 22 in 2017; Mohamed Bamba, No. 6 in 2018).

Horton-Tucker and Shayok were the 39th and 40th Cyclones to be drafted. Since the Big 12 was formed, Iowa State has had 13 selections which is third-best in the league. ISU last had two players drafted in 2016 when Georges Niang (Indiana Pacers) and Abdel Nader (Boston Celtics) were taken in the second round.

This year's draft is the 22nd time in 23 seasons the Big 12 has had at least one first-round choice. It marks the 14th consecutive year that at least one Big 12 student-athlete has been taken in the NBA Draft lottery as one of the top 14 picks. In the past five years of the NBA Draft, the Big 12 has had a player drafted at No. 6 or better each year.

Overall, 73 players have been chosen in the past 12 drafts. A total of 120 players from the Big 12 have been selected since the first league season in 1996-97.

KU has had a total of 33 players chosen since the Big 12 began play, more than any other league school. The Texas Longhorns are next among current members with 20 draftees, followed by Iowa State with 13, Oklahoma at 10, Oklahoma State at nine and Baylor with eight. Texas Tech (5), Kansas State (3) and West Virginia (1) round out the Big 12 team draft totals.
