Oklahoma earned its sixth straight and 10th overall Big 12 Gymnastics Championship title after recording 197.375 points. Maggie Nichols (OU) notched the first perfect score on vault in meet history on the Sooner’s way to victory.
Denver earned second place honors with 196.475 points, followed by West Virginia with 195.575 and Iowa State’s 195.500 points.
Capps earned the meet’s all-around title, notching a 39.625 mark. Nichols was named vault champion following her 10.0. Three Sooners tied for first in uneven bars with scores of 9.95: Nichols, Wofford and Dowell. On beam, Capps and Natalie Brown were co-champions after earning a pair of 9.925’s.
West Virginia’s Kirah Koshinski tied for second on vault with a 9.900 along with Iowa State’s Haylee Young and Capps. Denver’s Maddie Karr came in second in all-around, finishing with 39.450 points. In third was teammate Julia Ross (39.350).
In addition, All-Big 12 individual honors were announced. Gymnast of the Year was presented to Capps, who earned co-honors in 2016. Jackson notched her first Event Specialist of the Year title and Maggie Nichols, the Newcomer of the Year. Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart (DU) and KJ Kindler (OU) recorded the first set of Co-Coaches of the Year honors since 2002.
The NCAA selection show is slated for Monday, March 20 while the National Championships will take place April 14-15.
