Norman, Okla. - The 2017 Big 12 Tennis Championship theme of close matches continued through the final match between Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. The Texas Tech women's tennis team clinched their first conference tournament championship by downing Oklahoma State, 4-2.
Tech started off strong by earning the doubles point after earning wins by No. 1 doubles paring, Sabrina Federici and Sarah Dvorak and No. 2 Gabriela Talaba and Felicity Maltby. TTU was able to keep Oklahoma State at arms length by taking the one, two and five singles.
The Red Raiders began with wins by Talaba in the first singles spot and Dvorak at fifth for a 3-0 lead over OSU. The Cowgirls attempted a comeback, with victories on the third and fourth courts, but the match came down to the second ranked singles match between Felicity Maltby (TTU) and Katarina Adamovic (OSU). Maltby battled back after dropping the first set to win the second match 6-3. By winning the back and forth third set Maltby secured the championship for Texas Tech.
Talaba becomes the first TTU women's tennis player to earn the Most Outstanding Performer award. The junior earned the honor after winning all three of her singles points without dropping a set.
Next up for teams is the NCAA Championship May, 18-29 in Athens, Ga.
