Lawrence, Kan. - Day one of the 2017 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championship wraps up, with some top notch performances taking place from Rock Chalk Park on the campus of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.
Kansas holds the lead on the men's side with 22 first-day points while Kansas State sets the pace on the women's side with 28 points.
The day began with Kansas State's Jenee' Kassanavoid grabbing the title in the hammer throw by over seven feet with a toss of 206'11.” On the men's side, Gleb Dudarev (Kansas) earned the Big 12 hammer throw title thanks to a school record-breaking toss of 243'05,” besting his own mark from earler in the season.
Texas' Haley Crouser made history as she earned the Longhorn's first Big 12 title in the women's javelin. The junior overtook her best mark of the season by throwing the javelin 171 feet. Texas Tech's Werner Bouwer took the men's javelin crown. Bouwer ‘s 228 earns him the first javelin title for TTU since 2008.
The final event of day one, the men's and women's 10,000-meter, saw Oklahoma State's Hassan Abdi take home the win for the men (29:21.39) and Kansas' Sharon Lokedi earns back-to-back 10K wins on the women's side (33:43.28).
Day one of the decathlon saw Texas' Steele Wasik lead after the first five events with 4130 points. He holds a 175 point advantage over Texas Tech's Erin Lopez (3955 points).
The heptathlon concluded day one with Texas Tech's Kaylee Hinton leading with 3541 points. She won the high jump with a 5'10.5” leap, and sits in first place by 317 points over Baylor's Jenna Pfeiffer.
Tomorrow's action gets underway with the multi-events, beginning with the decathlon 110 meter hurdles at 10:00 a.m. Running events are estimated to begin at 4:00 p.m. with the last event starting a 8:00 p.m. CT.
