IRVING, Texas—Kelsey Chipman (Kansas State) and Caitlyn Vann (Missouri) were tabbed the Big 12 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, while Sydney Anderson (Nebraska) was named Rookie of the Week for the matches of Sept. 2-7, the conference office announced. It is the first honor for both Chipman and Vann. Anderson receives the accolade for the second straight week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Kelsey Chipman, Kansas State, MB, Jr., 6-1, Topeka, Kan./Washburn Rural
Chipman led No. 20 Kansas State to a 4-0 week and the Nike Portland Invitational title. She tallied 35 kills without any errors in 14 sets, while compiling a .515 hitting percentage which was second in the Big 12 last week. The Topeka, Kan. native also produced 3.43 points, 1.43 digs and 1.29 blocks per set. In the tournament finale against South Florida, she had two service aces late in the fourth and final set to hold off the Bulls for the victory. Chipman was named to the all-tournament team for her performance.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Caitlyn Vann, Missouri, L, So., 5-6, Muncie, Ind./Muncie
Vann paced the league with 5.27 digs per set after the Tigers swept host Maryland and defeated St. John’s, a 2007 NCAA Regional semifinalist, in five sets. She collected 58 digs on the weekend, including a Big 12 and career-best 34 digs against St. John’s -- a match that featured 59 ties and 27 lead changes. The Muncie, Ind. libero also posted double-digit dig totals in the sweep of Maryland (13) and loss to Kentucky (11).
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Sydney Anderson, Nebraska, S, So., 6-0, Salt Lake City, Utah/Utah
For the second week in a row, Anderson led the Big 12 in assists per set (11.67) in addition to averaging 2.11 digs and 0.78 kills. The conference preseason Newcomer of the Year hit at a .462 clip in three sweeps last week en route to earning a spot on the Paso Robles Marriott All- Tournament Team. Anderson picked up her first double-double as a Husker with 39 assists and 10 digs with four kills at No. 14 Cal Poly. The Huskers became the first squad to win at Cal Poly since 2006. It also marked the first time the Mustangs have been swept at home in four years.
