IRVING, TexasóRita Liliom (Kansas State), Ashley Mass (Iowa State) and Amanda Dowdy (Texas Tech) have been awarded Big 12 volleyball weekly accolades for the matches of Sept. 8-14, the conference office announced. Liliom and Mass were named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, while Dowdy was honored as the Rookie of the Week. It marks the third time for Mass to be recognized.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Rita Liliom, Kansas State, OH, Sr., 6-0, Budapest, Hungary/Csik Ferenc
Liliom tallied 67 kills in four matches, including her third double-double of the season in a 3-1 win over Liberty in the Varney’s Kansas State Invitational. The Budapest, Hungary native recorded 18 kills on .325 hitting along with 13 digs and four block assists in the match. She had 46 kills in the tournament overall to earn MVP honors. Liliom turned in 21 kills in a win over Cal State Bakersfield on Monday followed by 16- and 12-kill outings in sweeps of Northern Iowa and Cornell, respectively. On the week, Liliom paced the Big 12 with 5.57 points per set while ranking first in kills per set (4.79). She also averaged 2.50 digs.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Ashley Mass, Iowa State, L, So., 5-8, Muskego, Wis./Muskego
Mass extended her consecutive double-digit digs streak to 36 matches after collecting 77 digs in 13 sets. She averaged 5.92 digs while also recording a pair of service aces and posting 14 assists. Against UNI, Mass finished with 21 digs in the four-set loss. She added 15 in a sweep of Iowa before going for 24 in ISU’s three-set victory over Drake. Mass established the school’s three-set rally scoring era record with the total. The Muskego, Wis. sophomore capped the weekend with 17 digs in the Cyclones’ 3-0 win over Xavier to earn all-tournament team honors and move into first place in the Big 12 for digs per set.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Amanda Dowdy, Texas Tech, MB, Fr., 6-3, Lexington, Texas/Lexington
Dowdy compiled a .420 hitting percentage and averaged 3.64 kills in three matches. In the Big 12 opener against Oklahoma she posted a team-high 20 kills and a .421 hitting clip. She finished the weekend with 51 kills and 16 blocks en route to being named to the Red Raider Round-Up All-Tournament Team. Dowdy had the sixth-best league performance last week in hitting percentage, kills and points. She also was the highest-ranked freshman in the kills and points per set categories.
