Five Honored in Initial Big 12 Swimming & Diving Weekly Awards

Student-athletes from Texas and West Virginia received Big 12 swimming and diving weekly honors for competition through Sunday, Oct. 21. UT swept the men's side as Clay Youngquist was honored with the men's swimming award and Sean O'Brien received the diving accolade. On the women's side, Laura Sogar (Texas) and Rachael Burnett (West Virginia) earned swimmer of the week, while Haily VandePoel (West Virginia) garnered the diver award. This is the first career recognition forall five student-athletes.

Men's Swimmer of the Week
Clay Youngquist, Texas, So., Battle Creek, Mich.
Youngquist won both of his individual events and helped Texas to two relay victories, as the Longhorns won the four-team Southwest Collegiate Plunge. Youngquist's time of 1:36.20 in the 200 freestyle is the fastest in college swimming this season. He added an easy win in the 500 freestyle, where he defeated his nearest competitor by over five seconds.

Women's Swimmers of the Week
Laura Sogar, Texas, Sr., Exeter, R.I.
At the SMU Classic, Sogar claimed the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:10.98, which eclipsed the NCAA "B" cut and defeated her nearest competitor by two seconds. She added a second-place mark of 1:02.12 in the 100 breaststroke. Sogar is UT's record holder in both events.

Rachael Burnett, West Virginia, Sr., Springfield, Va.
Burnett racked up three first-place finishes in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle events against Penn State. She currently has the Conference's top times in both the 200 and 1650 freestyle. Nationally, Burnett has the No. 11 time in the 1650 free, No. 18 time in the 500 free and No. 22 time in the 200 free. Burnett has won the 500 free 27 of 29 times she has swam it. Through her career, Burnett has 67 first-place finishes in individual events.

Men's Diver of the Week
Sean O'Brien, Texas, Fr., Concord, Mass.
Competing in his first collegiate meet, O'Brien led the Horns at the Southwest Collegiate Plunge with a second-place finish in the three-meter event with 344.40 points and a third-place finish in the one-meter with 343.15 points.

Women's Diver of the Week
Haily VandePoel, West Virginia, So., Holland, Mich.
Against Penn State, VandePoel broke the school record on the 3-meter board with a score of 300.00 points. She also has qualified for the 2013 NCAA Zone "A" Diving Championships.
