Longhorns Sweep Day One of 2014 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships

AUSTIN, Texas - The Texas Longhorns claimed all five titles on day one of the 2014 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.

The Horns stand atop the men's and women's standings through day one. On the men's side, Texas leads with 175 points, the Horned Frogs sit in second (97) and West Virginia in third (80). The Texas women hold down first place with 80 points, Kansas has 66 points, followed by ISU and WVU (62) and TCU (58).

Texas took the top spot in both of the day's men's swimming finals. In the 200-yard medley relay, Kip Darmody, Imri Ganiel, Jack Conger and John Murray posted a time of 1:24.86. In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Texas' Jack Conger, Sam Lewis, Kip Darmody and Clay Youngquist took first with a time 6:17.24, the eighth-best mark in school history.

Lily Moldenhauer, Gretchen Jaques, Brynne Wong and Ellen Lobb claimed the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:37.16, a time that was good for the third-fastest time in program history. In the 800-yard freestyle, Alex Hooper, Kelsey Leneave, Madisyn Cox and Sam Tucker claimed the title with a time of 7:01.97.

Michael Hixon of Texas claimed the men's one meter diving title with 429.00 points. Hixon's teammate Wil Chandler finished second with a score of 404.2. The Longhorns claimed the top-six spots in the event. Hixon's score was good enough to best the previous Big 12 Championship record of 426.00 set by Grant Nel of Texas A&M in 2011.

Championship action resumes Thursday at 10 a.m. CT with preliminary action. The swimming finals are slated for a 6 p.m. CT start.
