USA Swimming announced Thursday the selection of Texas head women’s swimming and diving coach Carol Capitani to coach the U.S. women’s swimming team at next month’s Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool in Glasgow, Scotland.
Capitani replaces University of Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle, who will be unable to attend the event due to an upcoming knee replacement surgery, per USA Swimming. Capitani will be the first woman to coach a U.S. team at the Duel in the Pool.
Contested every two years, the Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool (Dec. 20-21) features the USA’s top men’s and women’s swimmers in a two-day competition against their European counterparts. The Americans are unbeaten in their three Duel in the Pool meets against Australia (2003, 2005, 2007) and their two such encounters against Europe (2009, 2011).
The Mutual of Omaha Duel in the Pool will mark Capitani’s seventh international coaching assignment and her first as a head coach. Most recently, Capitani served as an assistant coach with Team USA at the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
The second-year Texas coach led the Longhorns to victory at the Big 12 Championships and a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championships last season. Under Capitani’s tutelage, Laura Sogar won UT’s first NCAA individual women’s swimming title in 12 years, as she claimed the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Championships. Sogar went on to win silver and bronze medals for Team USA last summer at the World University Games.Capitani's International Coaching Assignments
