Robbie Rea (Oklahoma State), Hunter Musgrave (West Virginia) and Jake Matthys (K-State) have been named Big 12 baseball weekly award recipients for games played April 15-21.
Rea claims his second Player of the Week honor in his career, while Musgrave earns his second Pitcher of the Week distinction this season (March 25). This is the first career honor for Matthys, a freshman who nabbed the Newcomer of the Week award.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Robbie Rea, Oklahoma State, Sr., 3B, Topeka, Kan./Cowley County CC
Rea helped Oklahoma State to a 3-1 week that included a series win over Kansas State as he hit .400 (6-for-15) with three home runs, a double and four RBI. He racked up 16 total bases and a 1.067 slugging percentage, while adding a stolen base and scoring four runs. He also played error-free defense at the hot corner.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Harrison Musgrave, West Virginia, So., LHP, 6-1, Bridgeport, W.Va./Bridgeport
Musgrave led the Mountaineers to a 1-0 win in game one at Texas with a complete game shutout, allowing just six hits (three infield hits). Musgrave struck out nine, walking just two, in the 124-pitch effort in which he retired the Longhorns in order in the first, second, sixth and seventh innings. It was the first time since the final game of the 2011 regular season (Texas A&M) that Texas had been shutout at home in complete game fashion in Big 12 play.
For the season, Musgrave is 6-1 with a 2.70 ERA in 10 starts. Currently, he is riding a five-game winning streak and has yet to lose in Big 12 play, posting a 3-0 record. In conference play, he has a 1.29 ERA, striking out 31 in 28.0 innings and has allowed just four earned runs.In all games on the year, Musgrave ranks fourth in the league in wins, sixth in innings pitched and opponent batting average and eighth in strikeouts.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Jake Matthys, Kansas State, Fr., RHP, Spring Lake Park, Minn./Spring Lake Park
Matthys earned a win and a save in two appearances last week, including a career-high 4.1 scoreless innings Sunday to lead K-State to a road win at No. 27 Oklahoma State. Matthys began his week by tossing a perfect ninth inning with a strikeout Tuesday at Wichita State to earn his third save of the year.
On Sunday, the Spring Lake Park, Minn.-product entered a 2-2 game with the go-ahead run on base in the fifth inning. After recording a ground out to get out of the frame, Matthys worked around a leadoff double in the sixth and a leadoff infield single in the ninth to shut down the Cowboys over the final innings. Matthys, who at one point retired nine straight batters, allowed only the two hits with no walks and three strikeouts. His performance gave him his sixth victory of the year, the most by a Wildcat relief pitcher in the Big 12 era. He is one win away from tying the K-State freshman record.
