Seven student-athletes from the Big 12 have been named to the 2012-13 Capital One Academic All-District ® Men’s and Women’s At-Large Teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). These teams recognize the nation’s top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
West Virginia and Oklahoma led all league schools with two selections from conference-sponsored sports. WVU senior swimmer Jenelle Zee and sophomore swimmer David Palley both boasted 4.00 GPAs. Zee is a Long Valley, N.J.-native majoring in Pre-Criminology while Palley, a Civil Engineering major, hails from Walnut Creek, Calif. From Oklahoma, sophomore gymnast Rebecca Clark (3.76 GPA in Accounting) and Big 12 Rower of the Year Nicole Furmanek (3.93 GPA in Elementary Education) were both honored.
Kansas State women’s tennis junior Petra Niedermayerova, TCU men’s golfer Eli Cole, and Texas Tech women’s golfer Kim Kaufman were also named to the at-large teams.
While the Big 12 does not sponsor Rifle, WVU also had two student-athletes from the sport selected to the academic teams--senior Petra Zublasing and junior Thomas Kyanko.
The Academic All-District ® teams are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First-team Academic All-District ® honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America® Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
Capital One has been the entitlement rights holder to CoSIDA’s Academic All-America teams programs since 2011.
