Stephen Hagen (Texas Tech), Ross Stripling (Texas A&M) and Andre Wheeler (Texas Tech) have earned Phillips 66 Big 12 baseball weekly honors for games of March 14-20, in voting by a panel of media covering the Conference. This marks the first distinction for all three. Hagen collected the Player of the Week distinction, while Stripling's Pitcher of the Week award and Wheeler's Newcomer of the Week honor give the Aggies and Red Raiders two selections on the season in each category.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Stephen Hagen, Texas Tech, Jr., 1B, 6-2, 210, Lakebay, Wash. (Eastern Oklahoma)
Hagen hit .500 (9-for-18) with three multi-hit games, including a 5-for-6 effort with two doubles and a home run, to lead Texas Tech to a series victory over No. 14 Baylor last weekend. The series win was Tech's first over the Bears in Waco since 2001 and first Big 12 opening series win on the road since 1997. Hagen started the week going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Tuesday. In the second game of the series against Baylor, the junior became the first Red Raider this season with a five-hit game and three extra-base hits - two doubles and a home run - while also scoring three runs to finish a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. He wrapped up the weekend going 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in TTU's 10-6 series finale victory, ending the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .550 on-base percentage.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Ross Stripling, Texas A&M, Jr., RHP, 6-3, 190, Southlake, Texas (Carroll)
Stripling produced a pair of outstanding performances and lifted the Aggies to two wins as the starting pitcher against two nationally ranked teams last week. The Southlake, Texas, native's week began when he was given the starting nod against No. 13 Cal State Fullerton Tuesday. Stripling tossed seven shutout innings while yielding only three hits and a pair of walks. He also struck out five batters in the winning effort. On Sunday, the junior allowed one run over six innings to help clinch the series win for the Aggies over the Big 12's top hitting corps in No. 2 Oklahoma. The righty scattered seven hits with no walks and seven punch outs. For the week, Stripling was 2-0 with just two runs allowed in 13 innings of work while posting 12 strikeouts and a 1.38 ERA.
