Jonah Schmidt (Missouri), Taylor Jungmann (Texas) and Jared King (Kansas State) have claimed Phillips 66 Big 12 baseball weekly honors for games of May 2-8, in voting by a panel of media covering the Conference. Schmidt picked up Player of the Week honors, his first weekly award, while Jungmann earned his third career and second-straight Pitcher of the Week nod. This marks King's second Newcomer of the Week distinction this season.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jonah Schmidt, Missouri, OF, Sr., 6-3, 220, St. Louis, Mo. (Chaminade Prep)
Schmidt hit .500 while slugging 1.083 with an OBP of .571 to guide Mizzou to its third-straight Big 12 series win at Kansas State over the weekend. The senior tallied a pair of home runs, a double and accounted for 13 total bases while scoring a team-high five runs and knocking in three RBI, just one off of the team lead for the weekend. For the week, he batted .438 after going 1-for-4 at Missouri State on Tuesday. In the KSU series, the St. Louis, Mo.-native went 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI in the Tigers' Friday night win in Manhattan. Schmidt hit an RBI double to tie the game in the sixth and scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single in the same inning as MU never trailed after that point. On Saturday, he was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, launching a solo shot in the fourth inning. In Sunday's series-clinching win, he launched another solo dinger, his sixth of the season, while going 2-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI to lead Mizzou to a 12-8 victory. Schmidt's weekend performance raised his average to .375 in Big 12 play, which ranks fourth in the league and his season average goes to .326, 11th in the Conference. He also ranks third in Big 12 contests with a .600 slugging percentage and his 48 total bases are seventh.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Taylor Jungmann, Texas, RHP, Jr., 6-6, 220, Temple, Texas (Georgetown)
Jungmann improved to 11-0 with his 17th consecutive quality start in a 5-3 Longhorn victory over Nebraska on Friday night. The junior allowed just one earned run over 8.0 innings while notching nine strikeouts. The right-hander leads the league in innings pitched with 97.2, strikeouts with 90 and opponent batting average, holding foes to a .160 clip. He is the ninth league hurler to earn Pitcher of the Week honors three times in one season and third from UT.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Jared King, Kansas State, OF, Fr., 5-11, 208, Dublin, Ohio (Jerome)
King went 8-for-20 with a double, two home runs and five RBI in five games last week to raise his season average 22 points. The freshman tallied three multi-hit games in a series against Missouri, hitting .538 (8-for-13) with a double, a home run and four RBI. King also hit a home run against Cal State Bakersfield on Wednesday as he now has seven on the year and five in the last seven games. His seven home runs are tied for the K-State freshman record and are the most by a Wildcat freshman since 1994. The outfielder entered the week hitting .278 but raised his batting clip to an even .300, the first time he is hitting .300 or above since March 13. Along with his older brother Jason, the King's have combined for 16 of Kansas State's 28 home runs, while they are the only set of brothers to homer in the same game and tally multi-home run games this season. His Big 12 batting average of .325 ranks 13th in the Big 12 and third among freshmen.
