Max Muncy (Baylor), Mike Strong (Oklahoma State) and Ka'aina Eldredge (Kansas) have earned Phillips 66 Big 12 baseball weekly accolades for games of May 9-15, in voting by a panel of media covering the Conference. It is the first honor for all three players.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Max Muncy, Baylor, 1B, So., 6-0, 195, Keller, Texas (Keller)
Muncy hit .471 (8-for-17) with two home runs, a double, four RBI and four runs last week, extending his hitting streak to seven straight games. The sophomore helped the Bears, who took two-of-three from No. 19 Oklahoma State, to their first road series win over a ranked opponent since 2006 and first series win in Stillwater since 2003. Muncy drew a pair of walks, posted a .526 on-base percentage and an .882 slugging percentage with 15 total bases. On Tuesday, at No. 10 TCU, he hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning to tie the game and also delivered an RBI single in the ninth to cut BU's deficit to one. In total against the Horned Frogs, he drew a walk, scored two runs and drove in three of Baylor's six runs. In the series opener against OSU on Friday, he had one of only two hits for Baylor. In the second game of the series, he recorded a walk, a run and a double. In the series finale, the Keller, Texas-native went 4-for-5 with a home run and three singles. He tied the game at 1-1 with a solo homer in the third, his eighth round-tripper of the season and fifth in conference action.
With his performance on the weekend, Muncy moved into the top 10 in the Big 12 overall individual rankings in batting average, hits, home runs, RBI, total bases, walks, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. He also improved his batting average in league play to .372, good for fourth, and is tied for the league lead with 58 total bases in Big 12 play.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Mike Strong, Oklahoma State, LHP, Jr., 6-0, 187, Afton, Minn. (Iowa Western CC)
Strong had a career night for the Cowboys in the series opener against Baylor on Friday as the senior southpaw racked up 14 strikeouts, setting a career high and tying for the most strikeouts by a Big 12 pitcher this season. The 14 punch outs were also the most by a Big 12 pitcher in conference play this season and were two shy of OSU's single-game record.
In eight innings of work, the junior allowed just two hits, both of them singles, and did not allow a runner past second base with just a total of two reaching second on the night. He did not issue a walk and allowed just five baserunners (two singles, error, fielder's choice and a wild pitch on a strikeout). Strong recorded multiple strikeouts in five of his eight innings and retired the side in order four times. He also recorded five assists, and he faced just three batters over the minimum. Despite not getting a decision, Strong helped the Cowboys pick up a 1-0 win in 10 innings.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Ka'iana Eldredge, Kansas, Fr., 2B, 6-0, Honolulu, Hawaii (Punahou HS)
Eldredge enjoyed his best weekend as a collegiate athlete, going 8-for-11 in a four-game sweep of non-conference foe Alabama A&M. During the weekend series, Eldredge raised his season average from .226 to .264 and hit his first career home run. The freshman went 2-for-3 with three RBI in KU's win on Friday night and then collected four hits and scored four runs in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. He followed that up with a 2-for-2 effort with a pair of runs scored in the series finale Sunday. Eldredge is now tied for sixth on the team with 12 multi-hit games.
