Baylor is ranked No. 1 nationally for the first time in program history. The Bears share the top spot with Kentucky in the latest Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll and are ranked in the top five of the three additional national polls. It is the first No. 1 ranking for a Big 12 team since May 24, 2010 (Texas). The league has four teams ranked overall among the four lists this week with Texas A&M's highest spot at No. 9 by Baseball America, Texas at No. 18 and Oklahoma at No. 23 (Collegiate Baseball).
Baylor's 18-game Big 12 winning streak is the longest by any team in the league's 16-year history. Sunday's win over TAMU passed Texas (17, 2010) for the longest winning streak in conference play. Baylor's 24-game overall winning streak is the longest in program history and only the second of 20 Baylor winning streaks of 20 or more games (20 in 1985). It is the longest win streak this season by any DI baseball team.
The Bears can clinch a share of the regular season title as early as this weekend. BU is on a conference bye, however, if Texas A&M defeats Texas twice, Baylor earns at least a portion of the regular season crown. It will be its third overall and first since 2005 when the Bears shared the title with Nebraska and Texas.
2011 co-champions Texas (11-4) and Texas A&M (9-6) are still in contention for the regular season title as well. The two teams headline this weekend's conference series with Saturday's contest on FSN. In addition, Oklahoma State at Kansas State's Sunday matinee will be featured on ESPNU. Oklahoma visits Kansas while Texas Tech hosts Missouri.
A pre-Bedlam non-conference contest between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State is on tap for Tuesday night. OU enters with an eight-game winning streak, while host OSU has won four-straight. In addition, Kansas will host Kansas State in a non-conference game on Wednesday.
Baylor's Josh Ludy became the sixth player all-time to earn back-to-back Phillips 66 Big 12 Player of the Week honors for his performances over the past two weeks. The senior catcher gave BU its sixth Player honor this season - a Big 12 record for one program previously held by Texas Tech (5, 2004).
