Big 12 Quartet Named to 2014 NCBWA Preseason All-America Teams
December 18, 2013
Ross Kivett (Kansas State), Mark Payton (Texas), Preston Morrison (TCU) and Harrison Musgrave (West Virginia) have been named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason All-America teams.
Kivett, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year, was chosen as a first team selection, while Musgrave, the 2013 Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, is a second team honoree. Payton and Morrison were tabbed to the third team.
Kivett is coming off a season in which he earned three All-American designations and helped K-State earn its first conference title in 80 years. The second baseman batted .360 with 22 extra-base hits and 26 stolen bases as well as led the Big 12 in hits (94) and runs (57). For his efforts, Kivett was named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America Second Team, Baseball America All-America Third Team and Collegiate Baseball Louisville Slugger All-America Third Team.
In 24 Big 12 games last season, Kivett batted .376 with seven extra-base hits, 10 RBI and 10 stolen bases, helping him also garner a spot on the All-Big 12 First Team. After earning the Manhattan Regional MVP award and helping K-State reach its first Super Regional, Kivett was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 10th round of the MLB First-Year Player Draft, but the native of Broadview Heights, Ohio did not sign and chose to return to K-State for his senior season.
A native of Nutter Fort, W.Va., Musgrave went 9-1 with a 2.17 ERA and three complete games in 2013. In 95.1 innings of work, Musgrave struck out 81 batters and allowed just 65 hits. He was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year and honored as a Louisville Slugger Second Team All-American.
Payton reached base in 47 of 50 games last season, including a streak of 39 games from March 5-May 17. He finished the season with a .393 average to lead the league and rank 12th nationally and was the first Longhorn since 2005 to claim the league batting title (for overall games).
Morrison is coming off a strong sophomore campaign that saw him earn first-team All-Big 12 honors and a spot on the 2013 USA Baseball Collegiate National Team. In 2013, the right-hander went 7-3 and led the pitching staff with a 1.51 ERA in 107 innings pitched. In his two seasons, he owns a career record of 16-5 in 37 appearances and boasts a 1.80 ERA in 219.2 innings pitched.
The 2014 Big 12 baseball season begins on February 14.
