Quartet Tabbed Big 12 Baseball Weekly Award Honorees
March 24, 2014
Hector Lorenzana (Oklahoma) and Billy Fleming (West Virginia) share this week’s Big 12 Player of the Week honor, while Austin Stone (Baylor) earns the Pitcher of the Week and Nate Griep (Kansas State) is the Newcomer of the Week. The accolades are for games played March 17-23.
This is the first conference weekly honor for all four student-athletes. Additionally, Baylor becomes the first school to win the Pitcher of the Week award three weeks in row after Dillon Newman (March 17) and Josh Michalec (March 10) earned the honor the previous two weeks.
Hector Lorenzana, Oklahoma, Sr., SS, San Diego, Calif./Howard College
Lorenzana batted a team-leading .474 (9-for-19) in a 3-2 week for the Sooners. He scored five runs, drove in three and hit three doubles for a .632 slugging percentage and .500 on-base percentage. Lorenzana recorded three multi-hit games, including two three-hit games against Kansas State. He went 3-for-5 with two RBI, two doubles and a run in an 11-2 win on Saturday. Over the last eight games, his average has risen from .203 to .275.
Billy Fleming, West Virginia, Jr., 2B, Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South
Fleming batted .647 (11-for-17) with four runs, one double, five RBI, two walks and one stolen base in four games last week, helping WVU to a 2-2 record and a victory over No. 12 North Carolina. Fleming had a pair of two-hit games, one three-hit game and one four-hit game. Against UNC on Wednesday, Fleming went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two walks. The junior then went 2-for-4 with two singles in the series opener at UNCW on Friday, while going 3-for-5 and 4-for-5 on Saturday and Sunday, respectively. Fleming scored two runs apiece on Saturday and Sunday, plus drove in two runs on Saturday and one run on Sunday.
Austin Stone, Baylor, Jr., RHP, Port Neches, Texas/Groves
Stone was phenomenal in a three-hitter win vs. No. 20 Oklahoma State last Saturday as he turned in Baylor’s first nine-inning start since Max Garner vs. Illinois on March 9, 2013, and first complete game win since Josh Turley at Kansas State on April 13, 2012. With his first career complete game Stone had a season-high seven strikeouts while allowing just three hits. In his last three starts, Stone is 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA (allowed three unearned runs), 10 hits given up and seven walks with 14 strikeouts in 20.2 innings. The two wins have come against No. 3 Cal State Fullerton and No. 20 Oklahoma State.
Nate Griep, Kansas State, Fr., RHP, Omaha, Neb./Millard West
Griep earned two wins in his two starts over the week, his second and third career starts overall. He finished 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA, seven strikeouts and one walk. He scattered nine hits in his 14.0 innings, as opponents hit .188 against in the two starts.
Griep quieted the Big 12’s top offense on Sunday, March 23, by throwing a complete game, three-hit shutout against Oklahoma in K-State’s 5-0 win. The right-hander allowed five base runners total – three hits, a walk and an error – and used 106 pitches over the course of the 30 batters he faced. After the first inning, he faced just one over the minimum and retired the last eight batters he faced in a row. Griep helped lead K-State to its first shutout at Oklahoma since April 24, 1971 and the Wildcats’ first shutout on the road against a conference opponent since April 26, 1992 at Nebraska. It was also the first nine-inning complete game shutout thrown by a K-State pitcher in a conference road game since April 25, 1987. Entering the game, Oklahoma had tallied 33 hits through the first two games of the series. He also struck out five and did not walk a batter while allowing two runs on six hits in five innings pitched against Air Force on March 18.
Griep has held opponents to a .163 batting average against this season, the second-best mark in the Big 12. He is also third in the Big 12 with a 1.42 ERA through March 23, but also the only freshman to qualify for the Big 12’s top 10 in ERA.
