Baylor and Oklahoma Advance to NCAA Baseball Super Regionals
June 04, 2012
Baylor and Oklahoma punched tickets to the NCAA Baseball Super Regionals with Regional series wins on Monday night, giving the Big 12 multiple representatives in the 16-team Super Regional field for the third straight year.

Baylor clinched the Waco Regional to earn a Super Regional spot for the first time since 2005 and fourth time overall. The Bears also made appearances in 2003 and 1999 with the ‘05 season resulting in a College World Series appearance. Oklahoma took the Charlottesville Regional and will be making its third Super Regional appearance after advancing in 2010 and 2006.

The Sooners (42-23) will visit Columbia, S.C., to take on the two-time defending national champion South Carolina Gamecocks (43-17), while the Bears (48-15) will host Arkansas (42-19). Super Regional series include a best-of-three double elimination series and begin on Friday, June 8. Oklahoma is the last team to hand South Carolina a postseason loss, defeating the Gamecocks in the 2010 CWS.

The Big 12 has tallied 27 Super Regional appearances since the format was established in 1999, including multiple representatives in 11 years. The Conference is 34-31 in Super Regional contests and improved to 176-131 in NCAA Regional play after this weekend's games. The Big 12 has sent at least one team to the College World Series field of eight in three consecutive years and has totaled 15 appearances overall.

Baylor becomes the 12th league team to host a Super Regional. BU also hosted in 1999 and 2005 and is 3-3 when serving as a host site. Overall, Baylor is 4-5 in Super Regional play, while Oklahoma is 3-3. The Bears improved to 42-37 all-time in the NCAA postseason, and the Sooners are 80-68, the third most NCAA wins among active Big 12 teams.

Additionally, incoming member TCU won the College Station Regional and advances to play UCLA.

After trailing 1-0 after the first inning, the Bears scored three runs in the third and never looked back. BU added five runs over the final four frames as Newman kept DBU silent at the plate.

Oklahoma needed to sweep the Mountaineers to advance to the Super Regional field. OU won the first game easily, 14-6, behind four RBI from Matt Oberste and six from Cody Reine. Oberste went 4-for-4 with the four RBIs, while Reine drove in his six runs off a three-run homer, a sacrifice fly and a two-run triple. The Sooners pounded out a season-high in runs as eight of the starters collected a hit and Jack Mayfield joined Reine and Oberste with a multi-RBI game with two runs driven in.

In the second game, Jack Mayfield drove in three runs to give Drew Harrison plenty of insurance in his first start on the mound. Harrison lasted a career-high six innings and allowed two runs off three hits with four strikeouts. It marked Harrison's first career decision as Steven Okert recorded his fifth save of the season to close the door.
