PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Cal Towey, Baylor, Sr., 3B, Seattle, Wash./Eastside Catholic
Towey provided late-inning heroic game-winning homers for two Baylor wins as he drove in seven runs in four games last week. He hit .286 with 11 total bases, four walks, three runs scored, two home runs and a double. Against UT Arlington on Tuesday, Towey went 2-for-4 with two RBI, two walks, one run and double. On Friday versus No. 8 Oklahoma, he was 1-for-4 and hit a walk-off home run for a 2-1 win. On Sunday against the Sooners, he was 1-for-3 with four RBI and two walks as he hit a game-winning grand slam to put Baylor up by two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Towey leads Baylor with six game-winning RBI hits this season and the homers were his second and third career game-winning homers (May 23, 2010 vs. Oklahoma State). The grand slam was the first of his career and first by a Baylor player since Max Muncy against Rice on March 6, 2011.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Dillon Overton, Oklahoma, Jr., RHP, Weatherford, Okla./ Weatherford
Overton went eight innings with eight strikeouts for the Sooners, earning the win over Baylor last Saturday. The junior walked just two and gave up only one earned run to improve to 7-2 on the year, the most wins of any pitcher in the Big 12. Overton also is second in the league behind teammate Jonathan Gray averaging 8.13 strikeouts per game, helping OU maintain its place atop the Big 12 standings at 8-4 on the year.
NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
Jordan Piché, Kansas, Jr., RHP, Greeley, Colo./Indian Hills CC
Piché recorded a win and a save in KU’s first series victory over Texas since 2009. The junior college transfer did not allow a run in six innings of work, which spanned two relief appearances. Piché earned his fifth victory of the season on Friday night, pitching the final 4.1 innings in KU’s 12-inning win. The righty tossed 1.2 innings to save KU’s 4-3 win in the rubber game Sunday. In the series against UT, he walked one and struck out three. He is currently tops in the Big 12 with an 0.49 ERA in 36 2/3 innings and is tied for the conference lead with seven saves.
