Big 12 Baseball Weekly Award Winners Named

Eric Gutierrez (Texas Tech) and Nathan Thornhill (Texas) along with Matt Menard (Baylor) and Jordan Kipper (TCU) have earned Big 12 baseball weekly accolades for games played from April 4-13.
Gutierrez becomes the first Red Raider to win the Player of the Week distinction since May 2, 2011. Thornhill garners his first career honor with the Pitcher of the Week award, while Menard and Kipper share the Newcomer of the Week recognition.

Gutierrez led Texas Tech to a 4-0 record last week by batting .533 (8-for-15) with five runs, three doubles, a home run, seven RBI, a .933 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage. He hit safely in all four game last week. The sophomore guided Tech to its first Big 12 series sweep since 2011 while batting .455 (5-for-11) in a three-game series with Kansas State in Lubbock. Gutierrez started the week going 3-for-4 with four runs scored and four RBI with a home run against Abilene Christian. He started the K-State series going 2-for-4 with a double in a 4-3 victory. He doubled and drove in a run during Tech’s game two win over K-State and finished the weekend going 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of RBI.
Nathan Thornhill, Texas, Sr., RHP, Cedar Park, Texas/Cedar Park
Thornhill tossed a complete game against Oklahoma on Sunday, leading Texas to an 8-1 win as the Longhorns completed a series sweep of the Sooners. The senior needed just 93 pitches and struck out a season-high six while allowing just one run on five hits. He worked five 1-2-3 innings and allowed just one runner past second base in the game. It was the third career complete game for Thornhill, who improved to 6-0 with a Big 12 best 0.78 ERA. In his past two starts, Thornhill has logged 17 innings and allowed just one run on seven hits. Opponents are hitting just .168 against him this year, also best in the Big 12.
Jordan Kipper, TCU, Jr., RHP, Phoenix, Ariz./Central Arizona College
Kipper tossed a career-high eight innings at Dallas Baptist last Tuesday night. He allowed a run on four hits, did not walk a batter and tied his career-high with eight strikeouts. After giving up two hits to open the third inning, he retired 17 of the final 20 batters he faced. He retired a string of 11-straight from the fourth through the seventh inning. The junior posted four 1-2-3 innings and allowed only one runner past second base.
Matt Menard, Baylor, Fr., C, Bridge City, Texas/Bridge City
Menard enjoyed a solid week at the plate as he had a hit in all three games played to compile a .400 batting average (4-for-10), .500 slugging and on-base percentages with two RBI, two walks, one double and one run. On Friday at Dallas Baptist, he was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a double. In the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader in Waco, he was 2-for-4 with a run scored. In the second game, he went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
