Quartet Named Big 12 Baseball Weekly Award Winners
April 21, 2014
Garret Crain (TCU) and Jacob Rice (West Virginia) share this week’s Big 12 baseball Player of the Week honor, while Riley Ferrell (TCU) has been named the Pitcher of the Week and Daniel Castano (Baylor) claims the Newcomer of the Week.
Rice earns his second career Big 12 weekly award after claiming a Newcomer of the Week honor in 2013. Castano, Crain and Ferrell are all first-time weekly award recipients.
Garret Crain, TCU, Jr., INF, Mustang, Okla./Rose State College
Crain led TCU with a .538 (7-for-13) batting average in four games last week with a team-best four RBI, a .615 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage. He went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI against Houston Baptist on Tuesday with his first hit of the game coming with two outs to give TCU a 2-0 lead. In the weekend series against the Longhorns, Crain hit .400 (4-for-10) with two RBI and a run scored. In Thursday’s 3-0 win, he was responsible for two of the three runs with a run scored and an RBI. His base hit gave TCU a 1-0 lead and he later scored to make it a 3-0 game. The junior went 1-for-4 in Friday’s 2-0 win. Defensively, Crain made a diving catch on a line-drive to end the eighth on a ball that might have driven in two runs. In Saturday’s win, he was 2-for-3 with an RBI. He drove in the go-ahead run with two outs in the seventh inning.
Jacob Rice, West Virginia, Sr., OF, Tulsa, Okla./Eastern Oklahoma State College
Rice batted .533 (8-for-15) with four runs, two doubles, four RBI and two stolen bases in four games last week, leading WVU to a 3-1 record. Rice had three multi-hit games, including a three-hit performance on Saturday against Oklahoma with one run and one RBI.
Riley Ferrell, TCU, So., RHP, College Station, Texas/A&M Consolidated
Ferrell made three appearances last week, all coming on the road at No. 4 Texas. He picked up the save in all three of TCU’s wins in Austin. Ferrell allowed just two hits, walked one and struck out five in 3.1 innings of work. In Thursday’s 3-0 win, he retired the side in order in the ninth while recording two strikeouts. In Friday’s 2-0 victory, he entered the game in the eighth with the tying run on base. He retired all four batters he faced and struck out two. In Saturday’s 3-1 win, the sophomore earned the save getting one strikeout and a game-ending double play with the bases loaded. He pitched in three consecutive games for the first time in his career and was instrumental in helping TCU sweep Texas for the first time since 1994.
Daniel Castano, Baylor, Fr., LHP, Austin, Texas/Lake Travis
Castano was phenomenal on Saturday to help Baylor salvage the series finale at Kansas State in front of a sold-out crowd and national TV audience on ESPNU as he tossed a career-high eight innings while allowing an unearned run on six hits and no walks with a career-high six strikeouts in earning the win. He was only really challenged in the seventh inning after a pair of two-out singles but got a grounder to escape and pitched a 1-2-3 eighth to cap his day. In his first six collegiate starts, he is 3-0 with a 1.05 ERA while allowing nine runs (four earned) on 26 hits and seven walks with 19 strikeouts in 34.2 innings.
