Gutierrez, Piché and Vance Earn Baseball Weekly Awards
April 28, 2014
Eric Gutierrez (Texas Tech), Jordan Piché (Kansas) and Ross Vance (West Virginia) are recipients of Big 12 baseball weekly awards for games played from April 21-27
This is Gutierrez’s second Big 12 Player of the Week honor this season after claiming the award on April 14.
Piché, the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week, earns his fourth career Big 12 weekly award after notching three Newcomer of the Week distinctions last season. He is one of two players to earn four weekly awards over two different categories in his career (Jonathan Gray and Dillon Overton, Oklahoma).
Vance is WVU’s first Newcomer of the Week this season.
Eric Gutierrez, Texas Tech, So., 1B, Mission, Texas/Sharyland
Gutierrez blasted his eighth, ninth and 10th home runs of the season during the final two games of a series leading Texas Tech to its first Big 12 sweep over Oklahoma since 2002. Tech has now swept three straight series, including two during Big 12 play. On the week, Gutierrez batted .368 (7-for-19) with six runs, three homers, two walks and a .435 on-base percentage and .842 slugging percentage while finishing the week with three straight multi-hit games in series sweep over Oklahoma. Against Oklahoma, the sophomore totaled six hits and 10 RBI along with the three home runs plus five runs scored. Gutierrez became the first Red Raider to homer twice in a home game since 2010 while guiding Tech to a 14-4 win in the series finale during a seven-inning run-rule contest. Gutierrez currently leads the Big 12 in home runs (10), RBI (48), total bases (104) and slugging percentage (.601).
Jordan Piché, Kansas, Sr., RHP, Greeley, Colo./Indian Hills CC
In his fourth start since becoming the Friday night starter for Kansas, senior right-handed hurler Piché tossed the first complete game of his career, a one-hit shutout, leading the Jayhawks to a 1-0 win over the Bears at Baylor Ballpark on Friday, April 25. Against Baylor, Piché faced just three batters over the minimum, allowing two walks and a hit, while striking out five for his fifth win on the season. His career-high 106-pitch effort helped the Jayhawks break a four-game skid and set the table for a weekend sweep of the Bears in Waco. The only hit Piché gave up Friday night came from the first batter of the game. He then went nine-straight innings without surrendering a hit, which was the fewest hits allowed by a KU starter since Shaeffer Hall threw a no-hitter against Air Force, Feb. 20, 2009.
Ross Vance, West Virginia, So., LHP, McKinney, Texas/Dodge City CC
Vance started two games last week, going 2-0 with wins over Maryland last Tuesday and Kansas State on Sunday. The sophomore allowed two runs on eight hits in 13.0 innings with 13 strikeouts and one walk. Known previously as a lefty specialist, left-handed hitters went 1-for-24 last week against the Mountaineer who finished the week with a 1.38 ERA. Against Maryland, he gave up one run on three hits with six strikeouts and one walk in 6.0 innings. Against Kansas State, he gave up one run on five hits with seven strikeouts in 7.0 innings.
