Sooners Win 2013 Big 12 Rowing Championship

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The University of Oklahoma came from behind to claim its first Big 12 Rowing Championship Saturday at Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, Kan. The Sooners recorded 136 points and took down reigning champion Texas, which placed second with 117 points. Kansas recorded a third place finish (81 points) while West Virginia and Kansas State rounded out the rankings at fourth (75 points) and fifth (66 points), respectively.

This is OU’s first league rowing championship after Texas nabbed all four previous titles.

The Kansas Jayhawks started the day off strong, claiming their second rowing championship race title with a win at Fourth Varsity Eight. The Longhorns then notched the wins in Third Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Four to take the team lead. The Sooners came storming back though, clinching victories in the First Varsity Four, Second Varsity Eight and First Varsity Eight events to overtake Texas and clinch the championship crown.

The 2013 All-Big 12 Teams were also announced, with 10 student-athletes selected to each squad. The Big 12 Rower, Newcomer, Scholar-Athlete and Coach of the Year will be announced on Thursday, May 9. The NCAA Rowing Championship will be held May 31 - June 2 at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis, Ind.
