TCU’s Derek Odell and Preston Morrison along with Oklahoma’s Sheldon Neuse and Kansas State’s Tanner DeVinny have been named Big 12 baseball weekly award winners for games played from April 1-6.
Odell earns TCU’s first Big 12 Player of the Week honor since the Horned Frogs joined the league a season ago. This is Morrison’s first career Big 12 Pitcher of the Week accolade. Neuse claims his second Newcomer of the Week this season becoming the seventh player to earn the award multiple times in one season since it was added in 2011. DeVinny shares the Newcomer honor with Neuse.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Derek Odell, TCU, Jr., INF, Canyon, Texas/Canyon
Odell the team with a .643 batting average (9-for-14) and scored a team-high six runs in four games last week. The junior was on base 14 of the 20 times he came to the plate thanks to his nine hits and five walks. He drove in a pair of runs and tallied three stolen bases. Odell recorded at least two hits in all four games over the course of the week. Against UT Arlington, he was 2-for-3 with an RBI, a sacrifice and three runs scored. He was on base four of the six times he came to the plate. He went 7-for-11 (.636) against West Virginia and was instrumental in the game one come-from-behind victory. The junior was on base four times and scored the game-winning run in the ninth. In game two, he had three hits and scored two runs. In the series finale, he was on base three of the four times he came to the plate.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Preston Morrison, TCU, Jr., RHP, Waxhaw, N.C./Cuthbertson
On Saturday against West Virginia, Morrison improved to 3-3 on the season after throwing his second complete game of the year. He allowed just one hit, walked one and struck out seven. After a first inning one-out walk, Morrison retired 17 straight before allowing the lone hit of the game. He retired the final nine batters he faced. In total, Morrison faced just two batters over the minimum. The one-hitter was the second of his career. He also threw one as a freshman against San Diego State on May 19, 2012.
NEWCOMERS OF THE WEEK
Tanner DeVinny, Kansas State, Fr., DH, Lucas, Texas, Lovejoy
DeVinny finished second among all Big 12 players with a .600 (6-for-10) batting average while also collecting two doubles, a home run, three RBI, two walks, and a stolen base in three games last week. He became the first K-State freshman to hit a home run since Jared King in 2011 when he belted a three-run homer in the first inning of K-State’s 10-0 win over KU on Friday. On Sunday, April 6, DeVinny registered a career-high three hits, two of which were doubles. DeVinny reached base three times in each of the three games against KU, helping him post the best OBP of all Big 12 freshman (.714) and second-best OBP overall in the conference. He led the entire conference with a 1.100 slugging percentage.
Sheldon Neuse, Oklahoma, Fr., 3B, Fort Worth, Texas/Keller Fossil Ridge
Neuse hit .389 (7-for-18) with a team-high nine RBI last week. He drove in eight runs in a 3-for-6 effort in game one on Saturday with two three-run home runs. Neuse also tripled and scored three times in the contest. He finished the week slugging .833 to go with a .421 on-base percentage and two stolen bases. Neuse made one appearance on the mound, pitching a shutout inning in the ninth inning of the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.
