Big 12 Volleyball Goes 4-0 in NCAA Action, Advances Two Teams to Regionals
November 30, 2012
For the second straight year, the Iowa State and Texas volleyball teams have advanced to the NCAA Championship Regionals. The Big 12 went 4-0 on Friday night in the postseason event as Kansas and Oklahoma picked up first round wins.

Texas (25-4) defeated Texas A&M (25-6) in second round action, 3-1, to notch its seventh straight regional berth. The Longhorns will face either Florida or Charleston next Friday in Austin. UT has advanced to the regional finals each year since 2006, including trips to the national semifinal match in 2010 and 2008 plus an appearance in the national championship in 2009. This is Texas' 24th regional appearance all-time.

For the second night in a row, the Cyclones (22-7) overcame a 1-2 deficit to win in five sets as ISU defeated North Carolina (26-6) in Ames, 3-2. Iowa State makes its fifth appearance in the regionals and will travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face either Western Kentucky or the No. 2 national seed Stanford, who face off in second round action on Saturday. The Cyclones also advanced to regional competition in 2011 and from 2007-'09. Last season, Iowa State appeared in the regional finals for the second time in program history.

This is the 10th consecutive year at least a pair of Big 12 teams have moved on past the second round. The league has sent 45 teams to the regional semifinals.

In first round action Friday night, Kansas (26-6) defeated Cleveland State (23-7), 3-1, and will meet Wichita State (23-9) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT in second round play. This is the first time the Jayhawks have advanced past the first round since 2004. Oklahoma (22-10) knocked off Arizona State (20-14) in Provo to move on to second round play for the fourth time in seven years. The Sooners will face No. 12 national seed BYU (26-4) on Saturday at 8:00 p.m. CT.

The Big 12 improves to 76-23 in NCAA first round action, 45-32 in second round play and 161-96 overall.
