Jayhawks and Sooners Fall in Saturday’s NCAA Second Rounds
December 01, 2012
Kansas (26-7) and Oklahoma (22-11) were unable to join Iowa State and Texas in NCAA volleyball regional competition next weekend as both the Jayhawks and the Sooners lost in second round play Saturday night.

Kansas took a 1-0 lead on Wichita State (24-9), but fell 3-1 to the Shockers, who entered the match 0-6 against Big 12 teams in NCAA play. The 2012 Jayhawks finished the year as the winningest team in program history (.765), collected more home wins (17) than any other year, earned a program-best No. 6 RPI ranking and posted its highest Big 12 Conference finish (third, 12-4).

The Sooners were swept by host and No. 12 national seed BYU (28-3) in Provo, Utah. OU made its fourth straight trip to the NCAA postseason.

Opponents for the Cyclones and Longhorns were determined Saturday night. Texas will face No. 14 national seed Florida (27-4) in the regional semifinal next Friday, December 7, in Austin. With a win, the Longhorns will meet the winner of Southern California-Wichita State.

The Cyclones will take on No. 2 national seed and second-ranked Stanford (29-3) in Berkeley on Friday for their regional semifinal. Michigan and either Michigan State or defending national champion UCLA will join Iowa State and Stanford in the Berkeley Regional.

Regional semifinals will be telecast on ESPN3 with regional finals available on ESPNU. Times are to be determined.

This is the 10th consecutive year at least a pair of Big 12 teams have moved on past the second round. The league has sent 45 teams to the regional semifinals. The Big 12 is 76-23 in NCAA first round action, 45-34 in second round play and 161-98 overall.

Each quarterfinal/regional winner will advance to semifinal action in Louisville, Ky., held Thursday, Dec. 13 at 6 or 8 p.m. CT at the KFC YUM! Center. The national championship match will be played at 6 p.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 15. Both the national semifinal and national championship will be on ESPN2/ESPN3.
