Texas (5-0) claimed sole possession of the first-place spot on the league’s standings with a 3-1 win over Kansas in Lawrence last Saturday. The Jayhawks are now tied with Iowa State for second-place as both teams sport 4-1 marks. ISU will visit Austin this Saturday.
UT maintained its No. 3 national ranking in the latest AVCA poll, while Kansas re-entered the top 25. KU has not been ranked since a No. 20 preseason spot, but checks in at No. 23 this week. Oklahoma and Iowa State are receiving votes.
Texas’ win over KU snapped a 10-match Jayhawk win streak. The Longhorns now own the league’s best win streak, which is at eight games. Prior to 2013, only the 1991, 1992 and 2001 Kansas teams had won 10-consecutive matches.
Five league teams are ranked in the top 50 of this week’s NCAA RPI. The Longhorns remain at No. 1, while Kansas is No. 11. Oklahoma is 15, while Iowa State is 36 and Kansas State is 38.
Cyclone libero Kristen Hahn tied the Big 12 record for most career weekly awards as the senior earned her 15th Defensive Player of the Week selection this week. She is now tied with former ISU libero Ashley Mass. Hahn has had at least three weekly defensive distinctions in each of the past three years. Hahn also entered the top 10 of the Big 12 career digs chart last week. She is currently 10th on the list with 1,623 career digs.
Six league matches are on tap for week eight of the regular season. Both of Wednesday’s contests will be featured on FOX regional telecasts with Kansas at Texas Tech on FSSW+ and TCU at Baylor on FSSW. Saturday’s ISU-UT match will be on FSN.
The Jayhawks rank in the top 20 nationally in three categories - assists per set (13th, 13.51), kills per set (16th, 14.42) and blocks per set (19th, 2.78).
Nationally, KU’s Erin McNorton is third with 12.32 assists per set, while Hahn (Iowa State) is fourth with 5.79 digs per set.
Oklahoma’s Sallie McLaurin continues to lead the league in hitting percentage (.445), blocks (1.36) and points (4.56). She owns three of the league’s top 10 single-match hitting marks for the season.
