Longhorns & Sooners Advance to Second Round of NCAA Volleyball Play

Oklahoma (24-7) and Texas (24-3) picked up wins in the opening round of the 2013 NCAA Volleyball Championship with the Longhorns sweeping Texas State in Austin and the Sooners defeating Alabama, 3-1, in Stanford, Calif.

UT advances to face Texas A&M (19-11) on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The Longhorns also faced the Aggies in the second round in 2012. OU will face the winner of the match between seventh-seeded Stanford and Radford. That second round contest is scheduled for Friday at 9 p.m. CT. The two teams can advance to the 16-team regional field with wins on Friday.

The Sooners earned their sixth straight win, overcoming a 1-0 deficit to Alabama. OU was led by senior Sallie McLaurin who recorded 19 kills and hit .485 in the match. Oklahoma totaled a season-high 18 blocks and posted a .351 hitting percentage.

Texas’ victory marked its 20th straight as the Longhorns improved to 27-0 in the opening round of NCAA action. UT was led by All-Americans Haley Eckerman and Bailey Webster who both recorded double-digit kills. The Longhorns outhit Texas State .318-.092.

The Big 12’s Friday schedule will feature four overall matches as Iowa State (18-9) faces Colorado (17-13) in first round action from Minneapolis and 14th-seeded Kansas (23-7) hosts Wichita State (28-6) in first round play at 6:30 p.m. CT.

With the two wins, the Big 12 improves to 78-23 in NCAA first round action and 166-99 overall.

Teams advancing past the second round will advance to four regional tournaments, held Dec. 13-14. The four predetermined sites are: Galen Center, Los Angeles, Calif.; Memorial Coliseum, Lexington, Ky.; State Farm Center, Champaign, Ill.; and Bob Devaney Sports Center, Lincoln, Neb. Regional semifinals will be telecast on ESPN3 with regional finals available on ESPNU.

Each quarterfinal winner will advance to semifinal action in Seattle, Wash., held Thursday, Dec. 19, at 6:30 or 9:30 p.m. CT at the KeyArena. The national championship match will be played at 8:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 21. Both the national semifinal and national championship will be on ESPN2/ESPN3.
