Kansas State, Texas A&M Advance to NCAA Volleyball Second Round

Two of the seven Big 12 volleyball teams competing in NCAA Championship first round action secured wins on Thursday. Kansas State defeated Wichita State, 3-0, in Lincoln, Neb., while Texas A&M topped Lipscomb, 3-1, in College Station.

K-State (21-10) will face No. 2 national seed and former conference foe Nebraska (25-4) on Friday at 7 p.m. The Aggies (23-7) play Kentucky (27-5) at 6:30 p.m. In addition, five league squads have first round matches on tap Friday.

With the two wins, the Big 12 improves to 25-4 in NCAA first round action over the past six years and 147-89 overall.

The Wildcats, making their 13th overall appearance, have advanced to the second round for the first time since 2007. K-State is now 13-12 in NCAA postseason play. KSU was led by Kaitlynn Pelger who posted her 13th double-double on the year, leading the team in kills and digs. Alex Muff chipped in 10 kills, hitting .412, along with three blocks. This is the 11th time Kansas State has advanced to the second round as a member of the Big 12 Conference.

This marks the 11th time the Aggies have advanced to the second round in their 12 appearances as a member of the league. TAMU improves to 23-18 in postseason play. Texas A&M was led by Kelsey Black, who recorded 11 kills and 11 digs. Along with Black, three other Aggies had double-digit dig efforts, including Tori Mellinger's team-high 20. The Aggies are now 11-2 at home on the season.

Five more league squads will play first round matches on Friday, Dec. 2, starting with Missouri against No. 17 Florida at 5 p.m. Baylor faces No. 22 Michigan at 6:30, while No. 1 national seed Texas will host Texas State and Oklahoma will tangle with Tulsa. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Fourth-seeded Iowa State will take on Milwaukee in Ames at 7:30 p.m.

Teams advancing past the second round will move on to regional play Dec. 9 and 10. The pre-determined regional sites will be in Gainesville, Fla.; Honolulu, Hawaii; Lexington, Ky.; and Minneapolis, Minn.. All regional semifinal games will be shown on while regional final games will air on ESPNU.

The regional winners will advance to the semifinals and final hosted by UT-San Antonio and San Antonio Sports at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on Dec. 15 and 17. Both national semifinal games as well as the championship game will be telecast by ESPN2.
