Wildcats Upset No. 2 Nebraska to Advance to NCAA Volleyball Regionals

The Kansas State volleyball team improved to 8-1 in five set matches this season with a 3-2 upset over No. 2 national seed Nebraska (25-5) in the NCAA Volleyball Championship second round Friday night. The Wildcats (22-10) advance to the Honolulu Regional where they will face Pepperdine (24-6) on Friday, Dec. 9.

Texas (23-4) and Iowa State (23-5) look to join K-State in third round action. The Longhorns and Cyclones swept their first round opponents on Friday evening. UT defeated Texas State (27-7) and will face Michigan State (22-11) at 7 p.m. in Austin, while ISU blanked Milwaukee and will meet Miami (Fla.) (26-4) at 6:30 p.m. in Ames.

With wins on Saturday, Texas will advance to the Lexington Regional and Iowa State to the Minneapolis Regional.

The Wildcats (22-10), picked to finish eigth in the Big 12's preseason poll, also advanced to the third round in 2003 and 2000.

Texas A&M (23-8), playing in second round action, fell in three sets to Kentucky (28-5) in College Station. Overall, the Big 12 advanced four of its seven competing teams to the second round. The league is 5-4 in 2011 postseason play thus far.

In addition, three league squads fell in first round contests Friday night as No. 17 Florida (25-5) and No. 22 Michigan (21-12) handed Missouri (21-13) and Baylor (18-15) 3-1 losses, respectively. Oklahoma (21-12) lost to in-state rival Tulsa (28-6) in Los Angeles.

For the Wildcats, sophomore Kaitlynn Pelger posted 22 kills on .314 hitting along with 12 digs, while Lilla Porubek (17) and Alex Muff (12) also had double-digit kills on the night. Four Wildcats recorded double-digit dig totals, including Caitlynn Donahue, who complemented her 14 digs with 65 assists.

The Longhorns improved to 28-0 all-time in opening round matches of the NCAA Championship. Texas now owns a 63-26 record in 28 NCAA Championship appearances.

Big 12 Freshman of the Year Haley Eckerman highlighted the Texas attack with 16 kills on .433 hitting and chipped in two service aces in the win. The league's 2011 Player of the Year, outside hitter Bailey Webster, hammered out 11 kills on 19 error-free swings and hit at a .579 clip.

Iowa State was led by Jamie Straube, who hit .652 on the night with a team-high 16 kills and four block assists. Big 12 Libero of the Year Kristen Hahn chipped in 10 digs, while Allison Landwehr recorded a double-double with 10 digs and 35 assists.

Third round matches are slated for Friday, Dec. 9 with quarterfinal contests on Saturday, Dec. 10. All regional semifinal games will be shown on while regional final games will air on ESPNU.

The regional winners will advance to the semifinals and final hosted by UT-San Antonio and San Antonio Sports at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas, on Dec. 15 and 17. Both national semifinal games as well as the championship game will be telecast by ESPN2.
