Thirty-one Big 12 volleyball matches are scheduled for the second week of the regular season, six of which pit league teams against opponents ranked in the top 25. Texas, which dropped from the top spot to No. 6 after a season-opening loss to No. 11 Hawai’i on Friday, will face the No. 1 and No. 2 teams when the Longhorns host the Nike Big Four Challenge this weekend in Austin. UT will take on No. 1 Penn State on Saturday followed by an afternoon match with No. 2 Stanford on Sunday.
Iowa State, the other ranked league team (No. 11), will host No. 14 San Diego and No. 18 Illinois in the Iowa State Challenge this weekend. Meanwhile, TCU takes on No. 3 Southern California on Friday, while Oklahoma will face No. 25 BYU on Sunday.
Iowa State, K-State, Oklahoma and West Virginia are 3-0 after the opening week of the 2013 campaign as league teams combined for a 21-7 start. ISU, OU and WVU each lost just one set over the weekend, while the Wildcats won all three matches in five sets. Last year, Kansas State did not play its third five-set match until the 21st overall match of the season. All nine conference teams opened the season on the road.
Oklahoma senior Sallie McLaurin earned her seventh career Big 12 weekly award with Offensive Player of the Week honors after hitting over .400 in each match last weekend and totaling 41 kills for a .456 average. Kristen Hahn earned her 13th career Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week honor. She is now tied with Texas’ Destinee Hooker for the second-most career weekly awards in league history. WVU’s Jordan Anderson claimed the Rookie of the Week distinction after averaging 4.30 kills, 3.50 digs and 1.00 blocks in her WVU debut.
Hahn had 23 digs to extend her streak of at least 10+ digs in a match to 43 matches, only one behind Ashley Mass’ school record of 44 matches. She had 20+ digs for the sixth time in the last seven matches dating back to last season.
TCU freshman Regan McGuire tallied 12 blocks in the Horned Frogs’ four-set win over Lipscomb on Saturday. She recorded 15 on the weekend and tops the league in blocks per set with 1.67.
Texas Tech head coach Don Flora recorded his 300th career victory on Saturday when TTU defeated Grand Canyon.
KU’s comeback victory at Arizona marked Ray Bechard’s 250th win at Kansas. The winningest coach in program history, Bechard is the only Jayhawk coach with 250 wins, which ranks fourth all-time among Big 12 Conference coaches.
