Texas Advances to Eighth Straight NCAA Volleyball Regional
December 06, 2013
Defending national champion Texas (25-2) advanced to its eighth straight NCAA Volleyball Championship regional with a 3-1 win over Texas A&M Friday night in Austin. The win marked the 21st straight for the Longhorns, who will travel to familiar territory next weekend with a regional appearance in Lincoln, Neb.
UT will face the winner of American-Duke on Friday, Dec. 13. The Horns’ opponent and the match time will be determined on Saturday, Dec. 7, along with the other two teams in the four-team regional.
Kansas (24-7) hopes to join UT in the regional field as the Jayhawks picked up a first round win over Wichita State (28-7) in Lawrence. KU defeated the Shockers, 3-1, advancing to a second round match with Creighton (23-8) on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. CT. The Blue Jays defeated Kansas in Omaha earlier this season.
While Kansas and Texas picked up postseason wins, the Cyclones (18-10) and Sooners (24-8) saw their seasons come to an end. Iowa State fell to Colorado in first round action in Minneapolis, while Oklahoma was swept by third-ranked Stanford in the second round.
Texas’ eight consecutive regional berths is the longest active streak among all NCAA Division I teams. In tonight’s match against the Aggies, All-Americans Haley Eckerman and Bailey Webster recorded 20 and 18 kills, respectively, while defensively the Longhorns notched a season-high 18.5 team blocks. Junior Khat Bell and sophomore Molly McCage accrued eight block-assists each, a season-high for Bell.
In Lawrence, junior outside hitter Chelsea Albers led Kansas in front of over 4,000 fans at Allen Fieldhouse with a career-high 17 kills, while senior middle blocker Caroline Jarmoc added 16 kills. The Jayhawks recorded a season-high 10 aces and will be looking for the program’s first regional appearance.
The Big 12 moves to 168-101 overall in NCAA play.
Teams advancing past the second round will advance to four regional tournaments, held Dec. 13-14. The four predetermined sites are: Galen Center, Los Angeles, Calif.; Memorial Coliseum, Lexington, Ky.; State Farm Center, Champaign, Ill.; and Bob Devaney Sports Center, Lincoln, Neb. Regional semifinals will be telecast on ESPN3 with regional finals available on ESPNU.
Each quarterfinal winner will advance to semifinal action in Seattle, Wash., held Thursday, Dec. 19, at 6:30 or 9:30 p.m. CT at the KeyArena. The national championship match will be played at 8:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 21. Both the national semifinal and national championship will be on ESPN2/ESPN3.
