For the first time in program history, the Kansas Jayhawks will be making an appearance in the NCAA Volleyball Championship regional field. With a 3-1 win over Creighton (23-9) Saturday night in Lawrence, Kansas (25-7) advances to Los Angeles to face either third-seeded Washington or LSU on Friday, Dec. 13.
The 14th-seeded Jayhawks join defending national champion Texas (25-2) as one of 16 teams advancing to regional action. Texas will face Patriot League champion American (33-2), which defeated Georgia and 16th-seeded Duke in Durham this weekend.
Texas will be in familiar territory as it travels to Lincoln, Neb., for contests in the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Kansas will play at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on the campus of Southern California. Regional semifinals will be telecast on ESPN3 with regional finals available on ESPNU.
This is the 11th straight year the Big 12 has had multiple squads advance to the event’s "Sweet Sixteen." Overall, the league has totaled 47 regional semifinal appearances with a 25-20 mark while conference teams are 11-14 in regional final matches. The Big 12 is 169-101 overall in NCAA play.
Kansas, led by two-time Big 12 Coach of the Year Ray Bechard, was led by Chelsea Albers for the second night in a row. Albers bested her career-high of 17 kills against Wichita State in the first round on Friday night with 18 tonight against the Blue Jays. She hit at a .421 mark while also chipping in 17 digs. Tiana Dockery added 14 kills for KU, which played in front of over 3,000 fans at Allen Fieldhouse.
Winners of each regional advance to semifinal action in Seattle, Wash., held Thursday, Dec. 19, at 6:30 or 9:30 p.m. CT at the KeyArena. The national championship match will be played at 8:30 p.m. CT on Saturday, Dec. 21. Both the national semifinal and national championship will be on ESPN2/ESPN3.
