Texas senior Blaire Luna and Oklahoma sophomore Shelby Pendley have been named the Big 12 Pitcher and Player of the week for games April 9-14. The honor is Luna’s fourth of the season and third in the last four weeks. Pendley picks up her second award of the season.
Big 12 Player of the Week
Shelby Pendley, Oklahoma, So., INF, Rio Rancho, N.M.
Pendley led the Sooners in home runs, RBI, slugging and walks in a three-game sweep at Texas Tech.
In Friday night’s 9-0, six-inning win, Pendley recorded her sixth career multi-home run game and tied a career high with three hits. She hit a two-run home run in the first inning, and then crushed a solo home run to center in the sixth.
In a 6-0 win on Saturday, the sophomore was 1-3 with a run, walk and stolen base. Her walk came in the fifth, and Pendley came around to score later in the inning on a home run by Keilani Ricketts.
Pendley matched her career high in hits with another 3-4 day in Sunday’s 13-7 win. She also scored twice, drove in six runs, doubled, homered, walked and stole a base. Pendley delivered an RBI single in the first inning, hit a three-run homer in the second and finished her day with a two-run double in the sixth.
Big 12 Pitcher of the Week
Blaire Luna, Texas, Sr., RHP, Austin, Texas
Luna threw her second-straight no-hitter Friday against Iowa State and finished the weekend without allowing an earned run in 12.0 innings pitched. She surrendered just four hits and struck out 22 during the series against the Cyclones.
With the performance Friday, Luna became the second pitcher in Texas history to toss no-hitters in consecutive starts, joining Cat Osterman who accomplished the feat four times. Luna’s string of consecutive hitless innings reached 20-and-a-third frames, good for the second-longest streak in program history. The no-hitter also extended her streak of consecutive starts without allowing more than three hits to 10, the fifth longest in Texas history.
Sunday against the Cyclones, Luna allowed four hits and a pair of unearned runs while striking out 11 in earning her second win of the weekend. The Austin product has not surrendered an earned run in the last 26-and-a-third inning and has not given up one at home in the last 34-and-a-third frames.
The senior enters this week with a 21-1 record, tied with Cat Osterman (2006) for the best through 22 decisions in program history. Luna leads the Big 12 Conference with 258 strikeouts, 21 wins and a .101 opponent batting average while standing second in the league in shutouts with 10.
At time of last NCAA stats release, through April 7 games, Luna was tops in Division I in strikeouts per seven innings (12.9) and fewest hits allowed per seven innings (2.41).
