Maloney, Fahrner, Luallin Earn First Weekly Soccer Honors

Junior Kelsie Maloney of West Virginia and freshmen Kaitlyn Fahrner and Lizzie Luallin of Oklahoma have been selected as the first soccer weekly award winners of the 2014 season. All three players earn the first accolades of their careers.

Maloney had a hand in all four of the Mountaineers’ goals this weekend, assisting on two and scoring the tying goal versus Missouri. The junior forward also assisted on WVU’s only score at No. 11 Penn State. She then set up two goals against MU, the Mountaineers first score and the game-winner. Maloney also tallied her own score in the 62nd minute of that contest. Her five points were the most by any Big 12 player in the opening weekend of competition.

Kaitlyn Fahrner, Oklahoma, Fr., GK, Las Vegas, Nev./Coronado
Fahrner made her first two career starts for the Sooners, totaling 200 minutes and making nine saves. The redshirt freshman goalkeeper started the weekend with five saves versus Bedlam rival Oklahoma State, shutting out an OSU offense that fired 14 shots and five corners. She then followed with a strong outing against Utah. After narrowly surrendering an early goal in the ninth minute Fahrner did not allow another, making four total saves. Two stops came in overtime to keep the Utes off the board and preserve a 1-1 tie.

Lizzie Luallin, Oklahoma, Fr., MF, Leawood, Kan./St. Teresa’s Academy
Luallin was a key component in Oklahoma’s victory over Oklahoma State and tie against Utah. The freshman midfielder come off the bench to play 49 minutes versus OSU, recording an assist in the 26th minute to give the Sooners a 1-0 advantage. She followed with her first career start on Sunday, earning her first career goal on a strike from 10 yards out in the 26th minute to tie the match.
