An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
Schwindel, a Livingston, New Jersey native, is the second Mountaineer in as many seasons to be named a candidate. Frances Silva was the program’s first in 2013. Schwindel is the Big 12 Conference’s lone representative.
To be eligible for the Senior CLASS Award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence – community, classroom, character and competition.
“This is a huge honor, and I’m very thankful to be on the candidate list with a lot of great and talented senior athletes,” Schwindel said.
A two-time member of the Academic All-Big 12 Team, Schwindel is a child development and family studies major and is expected to graduate in four years. She also is a member of the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll and WVU’s Garrett Ford Academic Honor Roll.
Schwindel participates in several community service activities with the Mountaineers, including the WVU 4v4 Small-Sided Breast Cancer Tournament and WVU Relay for Life. She also has helped the program raise funds for breast cancer research through personal and team fund-raising projects.
A four-year starter, Schwindel is a two-time NSCAA/Continental Tire All-Central Region Second Team honoree. She also is a two-time All-Big 12 First Team honoree. She has won five conference titles in three seasons with the Mountaineers, including back-to-back Big 12 regular season crowns and the 2013 Big 12 Conference postseason championship. She was the team’s top returning point earner, earning a career-best 28 points in 18 matches in 2013, and currently leads WVU with six points through four games in 2014.
Midway through the regular season, the field of 30 will be narrowed down to 10 finalists. The final ballot will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans. The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Women’s College Cup championships in December.
