Lubbock, Texas Ė The 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships opened on Friday with competition in the decathlon and heptathlon and finals for the hammer throw and 10,000-meter run at Texas Tech's Terry & Linda Fuller Track. Iowa State leads on the women’s side with 23 team points, and Oklahoma State tops the men’s standings with 19.
Missouri swept the hammer throw, taking both the men’s and women’s titles. Senior Chris Rohr won the first hammer throw crown of his career, tallying a mark of 233-11 (71.30m) for a Big 12 meet record, while senior Krishna Lee added a win on the women’s side with a 209-2 (63.77m).
In the men’s decathlon, Mantas Silkauskas (Kansas State) leads the way with 4,231 points after four events. Defending women’s heptathlon champion Megan Wheatley (Nebraska) also completed four of her events, sitting in first with 3,551 points.
The men’s and women’s 10,000 races closed the day, with Lisa Koll (Iowa State) capturing the third straight win of her career in a time of 36:29.47. Ryan Vail of Oklahoma State won the men’s championship, clocking in at 30:33.85.
The second day of championship competition resumes Saturday, May 16 with combined events beginning at 10 a.m., field events at 1 p.m. and running events at 6 p.m. All-session passes are $15, while single-session passes are $7 for adults and $5 for children.
