In one season under coach Billy Gillispie Texas Tech managed just one Big 12 victory and the 8-23 overall record was the program's worst since 1990-91. Gillispie's replacement is Chris Walker, an assistant promoted to interim head coach in early October. The Red Raiders return four of their top five scorers and hope that seven newcomers will help raise the talent level. The Red Raiders have two solid and versatile forwards in sophomore Jordan Tolbert and junior Jaye Crockett.

"It's all about attitude. I was remarking to somebody the other day there are a lot of interim coaches out there, they just don't know it. ... I'm head coach for the first time in the Big 12. I'm going to give everything I have to the University, to the players and the community of Lubbock. I'm not worried about wins and losses and all that kind of stuff."
