Niang & Woodard Recognized With Menís Basketball Awards
December 16, 2013

Two players that led their teams to victories over in-state competition - Georges Niang (Iowa State) and Jordan Woodard (Oklahoma) -  have been chosen as the latest Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week. Niang is the fourth different Cyclone recognized with player honors this season, while Woodard is the second OU student-athlete to be named top newcomer.

Georges Niang, Iowa State, F, So., 6-7, 240, Methuen, Mass./The Tilton School
Niang finished with a career-high 24 points as the Cyclones won their only game of the week, a come-from-behind 85-82 victory over No. 22 Iowa.  The sophomore forward connected on what proved to be the game-winning basket on a reverse layup with 18 seconds remaining.  He was 8-of-15 (.533) from the field and made 8-of-10 (.800) from the free throw line en route to his second game in a row scoring a career high.  Niang also grabbed two rebounds with five assists, one blocked shot and two steals.

Jordan Woodard, Oklahoma, G, Fr., 6-0, 185, Arcadia, Okla./Edmond Memorial
Woodard recorded career-bests of 24 points and eight assists in Oklahoma’s 101-91 win over Tulsa.  Playing against his older brother, the freshman guard surpassed his previous career high by eight points and did so despite making just three field goals.  He scored 17 of his points at the free throw line on a school-record tying 22 attempts.  Woodard added three rebounds and a steal in 31 minutes and has scored in double figures in four of his last five outings.
