Smart, Selden Selected For Latest Menís Basketball Awards

Sophomore Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State) and freshman Wayne Selden (Kansas) have been chosen as Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week for games of January 6-12.  It is the second accolade for Smart this year and the seventh (three player, four rookie) weekly honor of his career.  Selden is recognized for the first time and is the fourth different Jayhawk to win a rookie award this season.

Smart averaged a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds, leading Oklahoma State to two victories last week.  The sophomore guard scored 24 points with 11 boards for his first double-double of the year in an 87-74 win over Texas.  He followed with another double-double in the victory at West Virginia (73-72), recording 22 points and a career-best 13 rebounds.  Smart was 12-of-26 (.462) from the floor on the week, including 3-of-6 (.500) from 3-point range and 16-of-20 (.800) from the free throw line.  He added 10 assists, seven steals, two blocked shots and just three turnovers in 72 minutes.

Selden helped the Jayhawks start 2-0 in conference play as KU won at Oklahoma (90-83) and defeated Kansas State (86-60).  The freshman guard opened the week with a career-best 24 points, including five 3-pointers, in the win in Norman.  The five 3-pointers were the most in a game by a Jayhawk this season.  He then added 20 points and four boards versus the Wildcats, connecting on 7-of-10 shots from the field.  For the week, Selden shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) and 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from beyond the arc.  He totaled six rebounds, four assists and two steals.
