It also marked the second consecutive season and third time overall that at least five conference standouts were taken in the first round. It was the six straight draft that at least one league athlete has been picked among the top six.
Colorado continued the Big 12 choices in the first round as guard Alec Burks was drafted 12th by the New Orleans Hornets, followed by Kansas teammates Markieff Morris at No. 13 to the Phoenix Suns and his brother Marcus to the Houston Rockets at No. 14. It is the first time in Big 12 history the conference has had four selections among the first 14 choices. It was also the second consecutive year that the NBA Draft boasted three straight first-round picks from the Big 12.
Jordan Hamilton, selected by the Dallas Mavericks at No. 26 before being traded to Denver, gave Texas two first-round selections for the second consecutive draft and third time in school history. Guard Cory Joseph was the third Longhorn taken, the first time in school history that UT has had three first-round picks.
This year’s draft is the 14th time in 15 years the Big 12 has had at least one first-round choice. A total of 78 players from the Big 12 have been selected since the first season in 1996-97. Kansas has had 21 players chosen - the most of any team in the Conference. Texas is next with 16, followed by Iowa State (7), Oklahoma (7), Missouri (5), Oklahoma State (5), Texas A&M (4), Colorado (4), Texas Tech (3), Baylor (2), Kansas State (2) and Nebraska (2).
The Big 12 has had at least four players drafted in each of the last eight years. In addition, there has been at least one league athlete among the top 10 overall selections in 11 of 15 seasons. Thirty-one players from the Big 12 have been drafted in the past four years.
