Smart & Kane Named Menís Basketball Award Winners
November 25, 2013

Guards Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State) and DeAndre Kane (Iowa State) are the latest winners of the Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week. Smart captures a conference weekly honor for the sixth time in his career, while Kane is named top newcomer for the second time in three weeks this season. With an Iowa State athlete winning an award, it marks just the third time in Big 12 history that one school has had at least one weekly accolade each of the first three weeks of the season.

Marcus Smart, Oklahoma State, G, So., 6-4, 225, Flower Mound, Texas/Marcus
Smart scored a career-high 39 points in the Cowboys’ only game of the week, a 101-80 victory over No. 11 Memphis. The sophomore guard connected on 11-of-21 (.524) shots from the floor, including 5-of 10 (.500) from 3-point range. He also made 12-of-16 (.750) from the free throw line. Smart had 24 of OSU’s first 29 points, outscoring the Tigers, 24-20, on his own through the first 11 minutes of the game. He added five steals, four rebounds and four assists with two blocks, en route to tying the school record for points in a game by a sophomore (Matt Clark).

DeAndre Kane, Iowa State, G, Sr., 6-4, 200, Pittsburgh, Pa./Marshall/The Patterson School
Kane posted his second double-double of the season as the Cyclones won at BYU, 90-88, handing the Cougars just their 12th home loss in the last 132 games. The senior guard finished with 21 points and tied his career high with 11 rebounds, adding three assists and two steals. He shot 60 percent (9-of-15) from the field and made 3-of-4 (.750) from the free throw line. Kane has been in double figures for all four games this year and is shooting 57.5 percent overall.
