Hogue, Chery, Spangler Earn Menís Basketball Honors

A trio of standouts - forwards Dustin Hogue (Iowa State) and Ryan Spangler (Oklahoma) and guard Kenny Chery (Baylor) - have been named recipients of the latest Big 12 Player and Newcomer of the Week awards. Hogue and Chery are recognized for the first time, while Spangler wins his second rookie accolade of 2013-14.

Hogue had a huge week for Iowa State, posting double-doubles in wins against Auburn and Northern Iowa to average 19.5 points and 15.0 rebounds. The junior forward started with career-highs of 22 points and 16 boards versus the Tigers, recording the Big 12’s first 20-point, 15-rebound output of the year. He then followed with a 17-point, 14-rebound effort against UNI for his third double-double of the season. On the week, Hogue shot 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the field, while making 3-of-6 (.500) from 3-point range and 12-of-18 (.667) from the free throw line.

Cherry led Baylor to a victory over the highest Associated Press-ranked opponent in school history as the Bears topped No. 3 Kentucky, 67-62. The junior guard led the team with 18 points, connecting on 8-of-15 (.533) shots from the floor. He had five assists and only two turnovers in 34 minutes, with one rebound and one steal. Included in his efforts were two free throws that gave BU the lead for good (56-55) with 6:01 remaining and a jumper with 41 seconds left to extend the Bears’ lead to 65-61. He is tied for second in the Big 12 with 44 overall assists.

Spangler averaged a double-double last week as the Sooners’ captured three victories. The sophomore forward had 13.0 points and 11.7 points per game, grabbing at least nine boards in each contest. He established career-highs with 20 points and 13 rebounds versus Mercer, making 7-of-10 shots from the field. He matched the rebound total versus George Mason, also grabbing 13 in that outing. For three games, he shot 60.9 percent from the field, while making one 3-pointer. He also connected on 10-of-13 (.769) free throws with four assists, four blocks and two steals.
