NORMAN, Okla. – After two days of action at the 2013 Big 12 Tennis Championships, the semifinal matchups have been set at the Headington Family Tennis Center. On the women’s side, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech advanced, while third-seeded Texas and fourth-seeded TCU both won first-round men’s matches to join the top two seeds (No. 1 Baylor and No. 2 Oklahoma) in the semifinal round.

Both men’s semifinal matches will begin at Noon CT, while the women’s action is slated to start at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Due to the looming threat of inclement weather, all matches began with singles play Friday.

In women’s action, top-seeded and 19th-ranked Baylor swept Kansas, 4-0. BU’s Jordaan Sanford made quick work of Maria Jose Cardona to take the first point at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1. The Lady Bears claimed straght-set victories at the fifth and sixth positions before Kiah Generette secured BU’s win with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over KU’s Paulina Los at No. 3. Baylor (16-13) moves on to face No. 5 Oklahoma State Saturday at 3 p.m. while KU dropped to 11-10 on the season.

OSU (14-7) advanced to the semifinals with its 4-2 win over No. 4 TCU (17-6). The two squads were deadlocked 2-2 with singles matches at the second and fifth spots still playing. After losing the first set, Cowgirl Meghan Blevins took down TCU’s Olivia Smith 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Then OSU’s Maria Alvarex clinched the match for the Cowgirls with a tight win over Federica Denti of TCU, 7-6 (8-6), 6-1, 6-3.

No. 3 Texas edged out home team and No. 6 Oklahoma, 4-1. UT took the first two singles points at the sixth and second positions before OU’s Emma Devine was able to pull one back for her team at the No. 6 spot. The match was clinched at No. 3 in three sets as UT’s Elizabeth Begley rallied to take down Mia Lancaster of Oklahoma, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. The Longhorns (15-10) move on to face Texas Tech while the Sooners fell to 13-9 on the year.

It took doubles play for No. 2 Texas Tech (19-5) to claim a 4-3 win over No. 7 Kansas State. With the Lady Raiders up 3-2 in singles, K-State’s Karla Bonacic battled back in the third set to take a 6-1, 7-5, 6-3 win over Tech’s Rashmi Teltumbde at No. 2 singles to force doubles play. An 8-1 win at No. 2 and an 8-2 victory at No. 3 clinched the doubles point and the match for the Lady Raiders. The Wildcats dropped to 10-11 on the year.

In the first men’s match of the championship, No. 4 TCU and No. 5 Texas Tech took it to three-set battles on four singles courts before TCU took the match, 4-2. The Horned Frogs won the first two points at the second and third positions before Vitor Manzini notched one back for Tech with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 1. After trading points at positions No. 4 and 6, TCU’s Rodolfo Bustamante was able to keep Texas Tech from forcing the doubles competition by clinching the team decision with a three-set victory at No. 5 singles over Francisco Zambon, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. The Horned Frogs (18-8) move on to face top-seeded Baylor (19-4) Saturday at Noon, while Tech fell to 15-11.

The final men’s match of the day saw third-seeded Texas sweep No. 6 Oklahoma State, 4-0. UT (16-7) face second-seeded Oklahoma Saturday at Noon, and the Cowboys finish the season at 12-14.
